New Computer Set Up Tips Part 1 Congratulations on purchasing a new computer. When setting up any new computer it’s important to verify a few settings and make a few modifications to help secure your new system. First, make sure you have anti virus software installed on your computer. In today’s computing environment a anti virus package is an absolute necessity. While all virus packages are different, they do have few common settings that you will need to verify are set properly in order to ensure maximum protection. The settings are: 1. Make sure the software is set to update its virus definitions or patterns automatically. The virus software you are using will connect to the internet at an interval that you specify and ensure that it knows of all the latest viruses. Having up to date virus information is the most important aspect of any virus package. 2. Run a full scan after you update the virus definition. If your computer is new there should not be any viruses present, but it’s best to run a scan and verify you’re off to a clean start. 3. Enable “auto protect”. This option is available in most packages and will allow your virus software to scan files real time in order to make sure they are virus free. Next, make sure you have Windows Messenger Service disabled. Click here for simple step by step instructions. Disabling this service will prevent other users from displaying pop up messages (not all, but a high %) on your computer. Finally, set your Windows XP auto update options. Click here for simple step by step instructions. Following this step will help ensure you always have the most recent Windows patches and updates installed. |
