1. Use the tools that sites provide. Read the ratings and reviews of sellers, sign up for price reduction notifications, read full descriptions, investigate specs and, if provided, use configuration tools to find products that match your needs. 2. Be prepared to spend more than a few minutes on these sites looking for the best products and deals. There are typically multiple ways to get to a product—by category, price, specs, etc. Learn how to use each site's tools well enough to find the product that's right for you. 3. Look for editorial and individual reviews that back up the product's value. This is especially helpful when you are considering purchasing a new computer or software package. 4. If members are reviewing the products (which they do if you shop through BlueBoxShopping), make sure there are more than a few ratings and reviews, and don't be swayed by anomalous and hyper-emotional reviews, good or bad. 5. If you don't recognize a retailer, check its rating, and look up the company at the Better Business Bureau's Web site. 6. Look for rebates. Some sites will allow you to link directly to them. 7. Many sites offer special bargain codes that can be found in snail-mail and e-mail. You'll be surprised how much you can save. If you're asked for a code at checkout time, do a quick Google search. I've saved money, and got some free stuff by looking up codes. 8. Shopping online sometimes means the prices you see do not include shipping. You get that information near the end of the transaction. However, some sites will let you enter your zip code and try to estimate shipping costs. Retailers will often comp shipping for orders over a certain amount (often $75 or $100). 9. Nearly all commerce engine sites have nothing to do with the final sale of the product, so be sure to print out all paper work from the site where you actually made the purchase. 10. After you've made a purchase and received the product, be sure to go back to the site and rate the seller yourself.
